Barry Solowey

Barry received a B.A. cum laude from Queens College, C.U.N.Y., and attended graduate school at the University of Chicago, studying composition with the late Ralph Shapey. In New York, he studied piano with the late legendary pianist Kurt Appelbaum, was a member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, and was choir director and pianist for the Presbyterian Church of the Ascension, East Harlem.

From 1978-2004 Barry taught music at the nationally recognized progressive public elementary school, Central Park East 1, also in East Harlem. The CPE Music Program included three choruses (Boys, Girls, and Mixed Choruses), a weekly All-School Sing, recorder classes, and an annual performance by the CPE Opera Company. Among the notable out-of-school performances by the CPE Mixed Chorus (students from grades 3-6) were concerts with Pete Seeger, the Gregg Smith Singers, the New York Treble Singers, the New York Choral Society (in Carnegie Hall), and annual concerts at the Museum of the City of New York. Barry studied the art of the child singer with the late George Bragg, founder and long-time director of the Texas Boys Choir, and studied voice with Dr. Virginia Davidson. He is also on the faculty of Philosophy Day School as music teacher. The PDS Chorus has appeared in public concerts as recently as March 15, 2008. He joined the staff of CurtainUp Kids in 2007.

 

Emily is proud to be earning a B.A. in Drama from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Playwrights Horizons Theatre School this year. She began her acting, singing and dancing career as a child in Columbia, SC, where she performed in numerous community theater productions. She
has continued to perform while studying at Tisch, in NYU productions as well as in the Brooklyn Family Theatre Production of "Peter Pan" as Mrs. Darling, in the BFT/Jay Entertainment/Music Society Production of "George M. Cohan: In His Own Words" as Ethel Levy, and in the original musical "What Fairy Tale Is This Anyway?" at the Producer's Club Theatre.

Emily is also a 'triple threat' teacher, having taught singing, dancing and musical theater to children and teens at Broadway Bound Theater Company in Columbia, SC. In Spring, 2007, she joined the teaching staff of CurtainUp Kids as an Teacher Assistant, and by the summer of 2007, became the lead Drama Teacher and Drama Director
for all of the musicals.
